About Évora

Évora is a Portuguese city in the municipality of Évora. This small but beautiful city is located in the Alentejo, a large region of wide plains on the south of Portugal, borderd on the North by the Tagus River and on the South by the region of Algarve.

The city is relatively close (140 km) from the capital of Portugal, Lisbon, and 80 km far from the Spanish border (Badajoz). The city has a very well preserved historical centre, partially enclosed by Medieval walls, where many valuable monuments can be visited: a Roman temple, a Museum, churches and chapels, university, etc.

Évora is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (UNESCO - Historic Centre of Évora) and also a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network.

About the University

The University of Évora was the second university to be founded in Portugal, in 1559, after an intention from the King D. João III and order of Cardinal D. Henrique.

Its cradle was the already functioning Colégio do Espírito Santo, whose building is still the core of the University, with an historical and architectural values of immeasurable beauty. The University comprises several other historical buildings scattered through the city, which can be identified by the symbol of a dove in a marble circle.

Getting to Évora from Lisbon

By car:
Exit the Lisbon through 25 de Abril Bridge (towards A2) or Vasco da Gama Bridge (towards A12).

If you come through Vasco da Gama Bridge, closer to the Airport, you’ll have to switch to A2 at a certain point. Directions are easy to follow on A2 highway.
A little further ahead you will have to change from A2 to A6.
Exit the A6 when you see the indication to Évora through the national road N114.

Driving straight ahead on this road, you will eventually find the city walls of Évora. Drive along the wall until you find the best closest road to your accommodations or to the University. When parking the car, make sure to check if it’s a paid parking lot or not. If it is, don’t forget to get your ticket from the machines and leave in on the front panel of the car, visible from the outside. (Estimate: 130 km, 1h40, approximately 10€ in tolls)

NOTE: If you are renting a car and driving in Portugal note that there are several highways with automatic-only toll systems: A4, A17, A22, A23, A24, A25, A28, A29, A41, A42. The easiest way to pay for these tolls, and avoid unwanted fines, is renting an automatic payment device (Via Verde) at your rent-a-car desk. For other highways you can either use the Via Verde or pay directly at the toll gates.

By bus (Rede Expressos):
Make your way to Sete Rios Coach Terminal (the easiest way to get there is by metro, exiting at Jardim Zoológico Metro Station). You can consult the schedules and buy your tickets in advance at Rede Expressos or at the desks. (Travel time: approximately 1:30 hours, approximate cost: 12 €).

By train (CP - Comboios de Portugal):
Departures from Oriente Railway Station (get there by metro using the red line and exiting at Oriente) or Sete Rios Railway Station. Visit cp.pt for schedules and tickets. (Travel time: 1h30 travel, approximate cost: 12-16 €).
